Fakir Mohan University (FMU), Balasore, has invited applications for one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position under the National Information System for Climate and Environment Studies (NICES) project titled “Forecasting Lightning Strikes, Enhancing Accuracy with High Resolution Models and Machine Learning: A Case Study from Odisha.” This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in advanced research in remote sensing, GIS, and climate studies.

Project Details

• Title: Forecasting Lightning Strikes, Enhancing Accuracy with High Resolution Models and Machine Learning: A Case Study from Odisha
• Funding Agency: National Information System for Climate and Environment Studies (NICES)
• Principal Investigator: Prof. Manoranjan Mishra, P.G. Department of Geography, Fakir Mohan University
• Duration: 3 years or until project completion (annual performance review)

Position & Remuneration

• Post: Junior Research Fellow (JRF) – 01 position
• Fellowship:
  • ₹37,000 + HRA per month for first 2 years
  • ₹42,000 + HRA per month for the 3rd year
• Scope: Opportunity for Ph.D. enrolment during the project

Eligibility Criteria

Essential Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Geography with Geoinformatics (RS/GIS) OR
• M.Sc./M.Tech. in Geoinformatics (RS/GIS) OR
• M.Sc./M.Tech. in Environmental Science with Geoinformatics (RS/GIS) OR
• B.Tech. in Geoinformatics OR
• M.Tech. in Geoinformatics with a degree in a relevant field OR
• Equivalent qualification
• Strong conceptual understanding of Remote Sensing, GIS, and related data products
• UGC/CSIR NET or GATE in relevant subjects

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience in Remote Sensing/GIS tools such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), ArcMap, QGIS
• Knowledge of feature selection methods, PCA, and machine learning algorithms (RF, GBM, SVM, XGBoost)

Age Limit:

• Maximum 32 years (relaxation for exceptionally qualified candidates)

Job Responsibilities

• Conducting research activities, including fieldwork, data analysis, and report preparation, related to the project
